Simulating OT Nodes with micro-ROS and DDS Communication on Emulated MCUs
This project is all about simulating a small Operational Technology (OT) network using microcontroller-based devices, similar to the one that is possible to find in a factory, a smart vehicle, or an industrial machine. You won’t be using real boards. Instead, you’ll emulate them using Renode, a tool that lets you run firmware as if it were on real hardware (like RISC-V or ARM-based MCUs).
Each device in this system will run a micro-ROS node. micro-ROS is a super lightweight version of the Robot Operating System (ROS), built specifically for microcontrollers. It brings real-time robotics-style messaging and task scheduling into embedded systems, without the complexity of full ROS.
To let the devices communicate with each other (or with a central controller), you’ll use DDS (Data Distribution Service). DDS is the middleware behind ROS 2, and micro-ROS can speak DDS natively. It supports publish/subscribe messaging, so your emulated nodes can send sensor data, listen for control messages, and coordinate behaviors, just like in real industrial OT networks.
You’ll set up:
One or more Renode-emulated MCUs (like a SiFive HiFive1),
A micro-ROS firmware on each,
A working DDS backend (using Fast DDS or Cyclone DDS),
A simple test scenario: e.g., one node simulates a sensor that publishes data, and another simulates an actuator that responds when a threshold is crossed.
