Write a 2,500-word literature review that provides a critical synthesis of a minimum of 20 academic sources on a topic of your choice (preferably your dissertation topic). At least 5 of the sources should be published no earlier than 2018. The literature review should accomplish the following:

Critically synthesize the theoretical research and empirical studies on the topic(s) relevant to your research question.
Identify a research gap through counter-claiming, identifying a niche, question-raising, or continuing a tradition.
Establish a narrow, grounded, and argumentative research question; a hypothesis; and a set of research objectives.
Additional Requirements:

Research Diary: Maintain a research diary documenting key stages of your research process. Submit selected entries – altogether 5 entries – as part of the final submission, which highlight significant milestones and reflections.
Submission Requirements:

Word Count: 2,500 words (between 2,250 and 2,750 words), including the research question, hypothesis, and research objectives but excluding the References and the Appendix section.
Format: Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) file. Please use Times New Roman 12 pt. or Calibri 12 pt. font with single line spacing.
Research Diary Entries: Altogether 5 selected entries documenting key stages of your research process. The research diary should be included in the Appendix and it is not included in the word counts.
Assessment Criteria:

Synthesis (40%): Ability to critically synthesize theoretical and empirical studies.
Source Use (10%): Quality and relevance of sources used.
Structure (20%): Coherence and organization of the literature review.
Research Objectives (10%): Clarity and relevance of research question, hypothesis, and objectives.
Language and Mechanics (10%): Accuracy in language, grammar, and referencing.
Research Diary (10%): Quality and comprehensiveness of diary entries documenting research process and AI use.
Penalties:

Papers shorter than 2,250 and longer than 2,750 words lose 10 points.
Papers shorter than 2,000 words fail automatically.
Papers with three or more discrepancies between the references used in-text and in the reference list will be awarded 0% in Language and Mechanics and Source Use.
Papers that do not contain a minimum of twenty (20) academic sources fail automatically.
Poor academic practice (e.g., quoting directly from sources that exceeds 10% of the paper) will result in automatic fail.
AI Policy Integration: Level 3

Permissible AI Use: AI tools can be used for specific elements of the task, such as generating summaries of sources, brainstorming themes, and refining the draft. Critical analysis, synthesis, and writing must be done independently.
Documentation Requirements: Keep records of AI interactions, including AI-generated summaries or drafts and your own contributions.
Disclosure: Clearly cite all AI use, including prompts and AI responses.
Example Disclosure: "ChatGPT 4.0 was used to generate initial summaries of selected academic sources and brainstorm potential themes for the literature review. Prompts included: 'Summarize the main findings of the article on renewable energy adoption in urban areas,' and 'Suggest themes for a literature review on renewable energy integration in urban settings.' The AI-generated content was critically analyzed and integrated into this review. Accessed: [Date]. Available at: https://chat.openai.com/."

The resit arrangement for the assignment is the same as above; you may resubmit the same paper, with corrections, that you submitted by the original deadline. The resubmission deadline will be specified on Moodle after the grades for the original submission are published.

Academic conduct notice

Harvard-style referencing needs to be used consistently throughout. Incomplete referencing shall result in reporting the case to the Academic Conduct Officer, who keeps a record of such violations. First offenders may resubmit their papers and may receive 50% at most. Repeated violations of academic standards shall be sanctioned in line with the plagiarism regulations as detailed in the Student Handbook.

Where the Academic Conduct Officer has reason to suspect that a piece of work submitted by a student was wholly or in part written by someone other than the student who submitted it, and this has not been disclosed by the student, they may call for the student to defend the work in a viva or a written comprehension test. The burden of proof in such a viva or test will be upon the student to demonstrate to the examination panel’s satisfaction his/her full comprehension of the work s/he has submitted. Failure to appear without satisfactory explanation will result in immediate failure of that assessment, with consequences of academic misconduct and application of sanctions.
